Opposite wood, normal side wood, and compression wood were isolated from leaning stems of Abies balsamea, Larix laricina, Picea mariana, Pinus resinosa, and Tsuga canadensis and were subjected to analyses for lignin and relative carbohydrate composition. There were no statistically significant differences between the data obtained for opposite wood and side wood. Contrary to some earlier reports, opposite wood has exactly the same content of lignin, cellulose, and hemicelluloses as has corresponding normal wood.
