N. M. L. Nathan a pense trouver une serie de difficultes dans l'utilitarisme projectiviste, c'est-a-dire dans l'association d'un utilitarisme qui definit la justesse morale par la maximisation de l'utilite, l'utilite etant elle-meme "la satisfaction des desirs informes", avec le projectivisme, selon lequel ce que nous desirons l'existence n'a pas une valeur independante de nos desirs. L'A. refute l'argumentation de Nathan, qui consistait a enfermer l'utilitarisme projectiviste dans une suite indefinie de desirs (autrement dit, dans un regressus a l'infini).
