When a philosopher like me is invited to address a professional group like the present audience, it is unreasonable to expect that he show expertise in their specialization of the level required from one addressing a conference of his peers in his own specialization. Hence, such an invitation must be based on a different expectation. Possibly the philosopher is expected to perform a ritual function, akin to that of a priest.
