The Arachnids are a subdivision of the Arthropods and they include the Spiders, Scorpions, King Crabs, Ticks and Mites. Only a relatively small number of Arachnids live in fresh water; most members of the group live on land. In Britain there is one species of aquatic spider (Argyroneta aquatica) and over two hundred species of water-mites all of which belong to the Hydracarina. A group of microscopic creatures, the Bear Animalcules or Tardigrada, resemble the Arachnids in some respects and are usually placed among them. There is one species of Bear Animalcule which inhabits permanent ponds.
