The techniques mainly used for genotype identification and characterization are presented and discussed in respect to their suitability and performance. Procedures are described for distinguishing between varieties and wild types of oats (Avena spp.) as well as varieties and provenances of Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) using electrophoretic techniques. First experiences in looking for electrophoretical markers in respect to “low input” genotypes of barley, especially nitrogen efficiency, are presented and discussed.
