This chapter contains some comprehensive ideas and principles about the role of protozoa in nature. These considerations are often discussed separately for different types of habitats, such as marine plankton or soils. In many respects the functional roles (niches) of protozoa do not differ fundamentally among different ecosystems and so it seems practical to discuss them within the common framework of theoretical ecology as an introduction to protozoan communities in nature.
