Lebensweise der Neandertaler

Abstract

Heute haben wir einen Punkt der Archaologiegeschichte erreicht, an dem die meisten fruheren Interpretationen uberholt sind. In den letzten Jahren haben Archaologen viel Muhe in die Entwicklung von Methoden gesteckt, die eine sichere Deutung archaologischer Befunde zulassen, und damit begonnen, alte Ergebnisse neu zu bewerten. Von Anfang an hatte man z. B. geglaubt, Neandertaler seien weitgehend Jager gewesen, welche die riesigen Herden der spatpleistozanen Grossauger in den Kaltesteppen Europas nutzten. In den achtziger Jahren wurde man vorsichtiger und vertrat starker den Standpunkt, das die Neandertaler nur Kleinsauger fingen und sich — zumindest in bestimmten Jahreszeiten — eher von Aas ernahrten als jagten. Diese neue Bedachtsamkeit ersetzte unser altes Neandertaler-Bild durch ein weniger dramatisches und bot die Moglichkeit, Wahrheit und Dichtung zu trennen. Gleichzeitig bahnte sie den Weg fur weitere Erkenntnisse durch moderne Analysetechniken.
