This chapter discusses how colleges and universities have used religious exemptions to Title IX (which prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational settings) to circumvent accommodations for transgender students. It also reports on the author’s research regarding social work education programs in conservative Christian schools. These programs are of interest as a specific case of the conflict between religious, personal, and professional values, due to social work’s Code of Ethics, which specifically prohibits discrimination based on—among other variables—gender identity and gender expression.
