Abstract

The Doppler effect, named for Christian Doppler (ca. 1842), has tremendous importance for science and technology. Thanks to it, air traffic controllers can distinguish among objects moving in the line of sight; on the ground, speeding cars can be identified before serious accidents occur; and in space, the velocities of the stars and the rotations and surface relief of the planets can be measured.
