It was shown in Chapter 11 that both the internal energy and the entropy of a closed hydrostatic system can be determined completely when the equation of state and one principal heat capacity are known. This knowledge then gives complete information about the thermodynamic behaviour of the system. The measurement of heat capacities was discussed in Chapter 11, where it was shown that, for a complete knowledge of both principal heat capacities, it is only necessary to measure the heat capacity at constant pressure for one state on each isotherm, provided that the equation of state is known.
