Abstract

There are many hardware platforms which form a part of pervasive computing: from sensors which may one day be invisible, through mobile phones to large (wall, room) interactive public systems. Along the way pervasive computing is also enabled by traditional PCs, mobile phone networks, GPS satellites and connections into existing embedded systems. In this chapter we examine the implications of hardware choice on pervasive computing, with particular reference to the challenges of power consumption and processing capability—and the variation that arises between systems.
