The author establishes several common fixed point theorems for compatible maps of a complete metric space using contractive conditions of Caristi type [\textit{J. Caristi}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 215, 241-251 (1976; Zbl 0305.47029)] and Hegedüs type [\textit{M. Hegedüs}, Acta Sci. Math. 42, 87-89 (1980; Zbl 0438.47057)].
