It wasn't too long ago that a registrar contacted me with a dilemma. He told me his college's math department had a policy of placing students into math classes based on the students' ACT scores. He then said the math department now felt that they needed more information. Department officials wanted to see each student's entire academic record, including the high school records, during the placement process. The department chair said this additional information was needed to determine whether the students were qualified to be in a particular math class or whether they should be placed into another math class more suitable to them.
