This is the third special issue on agricultural robots in the Journal of Field Robotics. The importance of this area has grown substantially since the first special issue in 2009 as it has become increasingly clear that robotics and automation will play a key role in humanity meeting its future food demands and reduce impacts on the ecosystem. This special issue covers a range of topics, yet as seen by the contributions the two dominant topics are robotic vision and robotic manipulation for agriculture. This reflects the importance of these topics to enable the successful deployment of robotics in agricultural environments.
