AbstractThe photoluminescence at low temperatures of Eu3+‐activated tungstates of the perovskite stacking‐variant type are reported. The main examples are Ba2La2‐xEuxMgW2□O12 (12 layer) and Ba2Y2‐xEuxW3□O18 (18 layer). The luminescence of 12 and 18 layer compounds are strikingly different. Not only are the emission and absorption spectra of the Eu3+ ions different, but also the energy transfer processes are not the same. These phenomena are discussed in terms of existing theories.
