Abstract

This study, titled `Making the Poor Visible Through Literature: Representations of Poverty and Urban Poverty in Sait Faik Abasıyanık's Stories (1936-1954)`, traces the footprints of poverty as a prevalent human rights violation in literature through the law and literature discipline. The access to right to legal remedies of the poor is either severely limited or non-existent. The space that literature envisages is proposed, therefore, vital in terms of poverty studies. The main textual comparative axis of the study leans on two short story collections by Sait Faik Abasıyanık. Semaver (1936), an early period work by Abasıyanık, has been selected for an extensive analysis and description of rural poverty and the poor in the newly emerging cities of the early Republican period. Alemdağ'da Var Bir Yılan (1954), the final short story collection of Abasıyanık, revolves around the themes of rural-urban migration, social exclusion and modern industrial cities and law of the city during the multi-party period in the country. While as a criticism method, social realism may be of significant help to analyze the relevant historical periods and Sait Faik Abasıyanık stories; the main idea behind the thesis is that through law-and-literature as an interdisciplinary literary criticism and literature, the poor becomes visible when the violation is widespread, its subjects invisible and the required social policy and laws are inadequate and mostly missing.
