Habsburg School Policy as a Means of National Identity Formation in Austria-Hungary

Habsburg School Policy as a Means of National Identity Formation in Austria-Hungary

Abstract

The author studies the policy of Habsburg government in the sphere of national identity formation in the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary’s population which was – among others – carried out through the system of elementary and secondary education system controlled by the Ministry of Culture and Enlightenment. The research is based on the library funds of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Art and Culture. The analysis of the most wide-spread textbooks of the period in question helps reveal the main means of all-Austrian identity propagation through teaching geography and history.
