The article examines the place of monologue speaking in the development of future German teachers’ language competence. For this purpose, the system of teaching speech is analyzed, the concept of monologue speech is revealed from the point of view of linguistics and the main methods of assessing language competences are presented. The article reveals the statements of some scholars who emphasize that the level of language competencies is considered insufficient for mastering the elementary level of German and that the emphasis should be on writing. From the pedagogical point of view, the system of training future German teachers is analyzed, in particular, the place of development of monologue speech as a component of professional competence. The issue of microlinguistics is raised, which considers speech skills to be a priority in learning a foreign language. This focus on linguistics and microlinguistics, according to scholars, raises a number of issues. However, in our opinion, the focus on monologue speaking is an instrumental concept of language learning and language skills acquisition. Monologue speech requires the speaker to be able to correctly express and complete his/her own thought, combine different phrases, supplement and modify already acquired language structures and adapt them in accordance with the set goals, discuss facts and reveal known causes of events. The formation of monologue speech involves the development and improvement of certain skills, in particular the ability to express ones thoughts using language structures. This means that students learn to build language constructions correctly, skillfully use the language material they have already learned and express their opinions freely. Thus, we conclude that: foreign language communicative competence is a combination of speech, sociocultural and linguistic competences; the academic approach to the formation of speech competence is an effective tool in learning a foreign language. Taking all this into account, we consider it appropriate to single out monologue speech as the basic one in the formation of language competences.
