The article presents the results of the implementation of the support group method for altering the divorce experience by a couple and improving the quality of parenthood by means of awareness, agreement on the distribution of different parenting functions among spouses, and the work with conflict within a couple that is getting divorced. The following theoretical methods have been used: the analysis of scientific, professional, and supplementary literature on psychological help in solving family conflicts during a divorce, the other theoretical methods the authors resorted to are systematization and generalization. The empirical methods of study that were used are “The family relations test” (FRT), the questionnaire “Conscious parenting” by M.C. Yermikhina, the method of “The aspects of communication in a couple” by Y.E. Alyoshyna, and the method “A letter to my wife” by C.A. Bilorusov. The empirical research showed that the communication in a couple that has gone through a divorce is happening in a predominantly negative manner. The noticeable aspects of it are a decrease in interpersonal comfort and trust, an absence of mutual interests, an increase in the mismanagement of raising children, lack of understanding of important elements of parenthood. Remarkable differences between the male and the female parts of the focus groups have been revealed. The method of support groups has been chosen in order to promote a more positive experience of going through a divorce and correct the mistakes in bringing up children after a divorce. The assessment of group efficiency allows us to state positive changes in mutual understanding, trust, and interpersonal comfort between the divorced spouses, the level of frustration in expectations, and a negative evaluation of the other spouse. Noteworthy are also the changes in parents’ outlook on demands – bans related to the child and the extremity of sanctions; the number of parents who extrapolate the conflict between parents into the child’s upbringing and spoil the child has decreased; the majority of those under study have commented on the rise in awareness of their parenting functions. The research has made it possible to find out the most important problems in the relations between spouses that are going through a divorce, approaches to raising mutual children, and justify the method of support groups for their correction. After parents participated in support groups their level of awareness of their parenting functions has risen, while the level of emotional tension and hostility between spouses has fallen. As the mutual upbringing of a child after a divorce is heavily influenced by the quality of the relationship between spouses and their ability to preserve a positive stance toward each other, the next stage of the research will focus on the development of recommendations for conscious parenting.
