MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN PRIMARY SCHOOL IN THE MEASURE OF TODAYʼS CHALLENGES: PROBLEMS AND MEANS OF THEIR SOLUTION

Abstract

The article is devoted to the highlighting of the problem of development of mathematics education in primary school in the context of today’s challenges. Mathematical competence is one of the key competences of education seekers. The educational field “Mathematics” has a significant potential for the formation of these key competencies in students. It is noted that subject mathematical competence is manifested in the ability of a student of primary education to recognize problem situations that can be solved by mathematical methods; create mathematical models of the processes of the surrounding world using mathematical methods; to reason logically; to realize the importance of mathematics for learning about the world around us. Computational, measuring, geometric, algebraic, information-graphic, logical, communicative components are the components of subject-matter mathematical competence. The results of the mandatory state final certification in mathematics in the form of external examinations, as well as the data of PISA 2018 in mathematics, testify to the insufficient level of knowledge of students in mathematics and encourage the search for solutions of problems related to the provision of high-quality mathematics learning at school, aimed at forming the students’ mathematical competence. It was concluded that one of the effective means of raising the level of mathematics education at school is a clear differentiation of the standards of mathematics education and their introduction, training and retraining of primary school teachers for the formation of mathematical skills of students that would meet the challenges of today, and close cooperation between parents and schools on the formation mathematical competence of children, active involvement of parents into this process at home through joint game activities. The examples of tasks aimed at forming the children’s mathematical skills and awakening interest in studying mathematics are given. Methodical recommendations for parents regarding the formation of children’s mathematical competence are offered.

Стаття присвячена висвітленню проблеми розвитку математичної освіти в початковій школі в контексті сьогоднішніх викликів. Зазначено що математична компетентність належить до ключових компетентностей здобувачів освіти. Увиразнено результати обов’язкової державної підсумкової атестації з математики у формі ЗНО, а також дані PISA 2018 р. з математики, що засвідчують недостатній рівень математичних знань учнів. Зроблено висновок, що одними з ефективних засобів підвищення рівня математичної освіти в школі є чітка диференціація стандартів математичної освіти та запровадження їх, підготовка та перепідготовка вчителів початкових класів до формування математичних навичок учнів, які б відповідали викликам сьогодення, а також тісна співпраця батьків і школи щодо формування математичної компетентності учнів, активне залучення батьків до цього процесу за домашніх умов через спільну ігрову діяльність. Наведено приклади завдань, спрямованих на формування в дітей математичних навичок, пробудження інтересу до вивчення математики. Запропоновано методичні рекомендації батькам щодо формування математичної компетентності дітей.
