Analyse der Flora der Insel Mljet

Abstract

Studies of the flora of the island of Mljet so far have recorded 604 species and subspecies of 363 genera and 87 families of vascular plants (Table 1). The most numerously represented are the families Fabaceae (68 species) and Poaceae (59 species) (Table 2). Of the total number of species, 314 (ca 52%) belong to various groups of the Mediterranean floristic element, the most numerous among them being circummediterranean plants (Table 3). From a phytogeographical point of view, in the frames of the Mediterranean floral element, Illyrian -Adriatic plants (e.g. Centaurea ragusina, Cardamine marítima, Campanula pyramidalis, Salvia bertolonii, Limonium anfractum), East-Mediterranean plants (e.g. Ptilostemon stellatus, Arbutus andrachne, Phlomis fruticosa, Erica manipuliflora, Salvia peloponnesiaca) and West-Mediterranean plants (e.g. Anthyllis barba-jovis, Coronilla valentina, Teucrium fruticans, Phillyrea angustifolia) are of special significance. Of life forms terrophytes are represented by the greatest number of species (some 45% of the species, Table 4). The total number of species in relation to the area (ca 600 species to 100 sq. km) suggests that the island of Mljet, as compared to other 11 Yugoslav smaller or larger Islands, is floristically comparatively rich (Table 5). The predominance of the Mediterranean floral element, the great share of terrophyte species and the high number of plants of the family Fabaceae are a clear evidence of the typically Mediterranean character of the flora on this island, while the presence of Illyrian-Adriatic plants indicates the position of the island of Mljet in the East-Adriatic phytogeographical province of the Mediterranean ¡region.

Anthyllis barba-jovis, Coronilla valentina, Teucrium fruticans, Phillyrea angustifolia). Dominantnost mediteranskog flornog elementa, velika zastupljenost terofitskih vrsta te veliki broj biljaka porodice Fabaceae jasno govori o izrazito mediteranskom karakteru flore toga otoka, a nazočnost ilirsko- jadranskih biljaka indicira položaj otoka Mljeta u istočnojadranskom sektoru jadranske fitogeografske provincije mediteranske regije.
