Religio. Intermedial analysis of the Arras Mystery Play Manuscript, written by Eustache Marcadé

Abstract

The Arras mystery play, written by Eustache Marcadé, is one of the first large-scale stagings of the life of Christ in French. Its manuscript has long been considered an illuminated masterpiece, but the systematic study of the relationship between text and image had never been undertaken. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how the users of the book, made up of both spectators and readers of this multimedia object, were able to represent themselves and mentally relive the play thanks to the text and the images. The study of the most significative events of the life of Christ and of three dramatic themes (the demons, the Trinity and the preaching) allow us to show how a communication based on the notion of religio worked, which aims to persuade the public to meditate and follow the way of Christ.
