Conceptual Metaphor in the Popular-Scientific Discourse of Astrophysics and its Translation from English into Croatian and Russian

Abstract

This thesis examines the use of metaphor in two popular-scientific texts on astrophysics by Stephen Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson respectively and provides insight into its translation from English into Croatian and Russian. The aim of this thesis is to ascertain whether this type of discourses invites a particular type of approach to metaphor and to identify any potential differences in the way different authors incorporate metaphor into their texts. Additionally, by discussing the complex multifunctional nature of metaphor, its degree of translatability is also investigated. This research incorporates the metaphor identification procedure VU University Amsterdam (MIPVU) method for identifying metaphors and relies on the cognitive linguistic claim that we tend to understand and conceptualize the unfamiliar and abstract in terms of the familiar. Examining conceptual metaphor in popular scientific discourse elucidates the multifunctional nature of metaphor and its ability to elucidate complex scientific phenomena. By studying metaphor in translation, we can distinguish between transferable and language-specific aspects of metaphor, aiding in future translation attempts.

В данной дипломной работе исследуется использование метафоры в двух научно-популярных текстах по астрофизике Стивена Хокинга и Нила Деграсса Тайсона и поднимается вопрос ее перевода с английского на хорватский и русский языки. Целью работы является выяснение, приглашает ли этот тип дискурса конкретный подход к метафоре, и существуют ли какие-то разницы в способе, которым разные авторы включают метафоры в свои тексты. Кроме того, обсуждая сложную многофункциональную природу метафоры, исследуется и степень ее переводимости. Для идентификации метафор в данном исследовании применяется метод идентификации метафор Амстердамского свободного университета (MIPVU), и оно опирается на когнитивно-лингвистическое утверждение о том, что мы часто понимаем и концептуализируем нам неизвестное и странное с точки зрения знакомого. Изучение концептуальной метафоры в научно-популярном дискурсе проясняет ее многофункциональную природу и способность объяснять сложные научные явления. Исследуя метафору в переводе, мы можем различать между переносимыми и языково-специфическими аспектами метафоры, что способствует будущим попыткам перевода.

Ovaj diplomski rad bavi se uporabom metafore u dva popularno-znanstvena teksta o astrofizici, autora Stephena Hawkinga i Neila deGrasse Tysona, te pruža uvid u njezin prijevod s engleskog na hrvatski i ruski jezik. Cilj ovog rada utvrditi je priziva li ovaj tip diskursa poseban pristup metafori te identificirati potencijalne razlike u načinu na koji različiti autori koriste metaforu. Razmatranjem složene i multifunkcionalne prirode metafore u ovom radu istražuje se i stupanj njezine prevodivosti. Dano istraživanje koristi metodu za identificiranje metafora VU Sveučilišta u Amsterdamu (MIPVU) i oslanja se na kognitivno-lingvističku tvrdnju da često težimo razumijevanju i koncipiranju nepoznatog i apstraktnog putem nama poznatog. Proučavanje konceptualne metafore u popularno-znanstvenom diskursu demonstrira njenu multifunkcionalnu prirodu i sposobnost da objasni složene znanstvene fenomene. Istraživanjem metafore u prijevodu možemo razlikovati između prenosivih i jezično-specifičnih aspekata metafore, što može pomoći u budućim pokušajima prevođenja.
