Balkanski ratovi i turski nacionalizam

Abstract

This master's thesis seeks to answer the question of whether the Balkan wars were a kind of impetus for the development of Turkish national identity. The 19th and 20th century was the era of the emergence of nationalisms around the world, including among minority nations in multinational empires. The national movements of the Balkan peoples in the Ottoman Empire appeared relatively early, already at the beginning of the 19th century, and caused the Balkan wars that took place in the period from 1912 to 1913 in the area of Southeast Europe. After the Balkan Wars, it became clear that there was a need for a new social identity in the Ottoman Empire, which was sought by intellectuals such as Ziya Gökalp and Yusuf Akçura. Moreover, Ziya Gokalp is considered the founder of Turkish nationalism, and his ideas served as the basis for the further development of Turkish nationalism after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923.
