Effectiveness of preventive measures in the use of illegal addictive substances in the Italian young people

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In the past, when the problems were others, wondering about happiness or fullness had a secondary role compared to nowadays, when satisfaction, comfort, and strong emotions define a full life. In a society where people are constantly looking for incentives to make them feel “awake” or turn off the pain or monotony in life, there are those who choose addictive substances. When it comes to the Italian youth, the question is: are there preventive measures to avoid that they fall in the use of addictive substances? During that period in life, the high levels of psychic stress, the social pressure, the lack of sense of that stage of change and the “curiosity” is given as the main reasons to try drugs and can lead to greater vulnerability to addiction. In Italy, prevention measures are merely the provision of information and awareness, while the interactive methods or peer-to-peer activities remain limited. We, therefore, feel the need to analyze the means of the action of the country. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Review of the scientific literature between 2015 and 2018, in SciELO and PubMed, including Spanish and English studies and official statistics pages, such as UNODC or EMCDDA. RESULTS: According to a European report on drugs published by the EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addition) in 2018, young Italians between the ages of 15 and 34 were respectively in the first and second place in the use of cannabis and cocaine in Europe. From a sample of 2172 Italian young people (15- 34 years old), 21% of them have tried one or more illegal drugs in their life. DISCUSSION: The data confirms educational programs are the main preventive activities currently offered in Italy, but the figures remain the same and we need an intervention in the normative to obtain some use reduction. The need to take this action is a clear sign that the education given was not the adequate to achieve the desired objectives. For these reasons, we propose a prevention the method that not only offers information on the damage produced by drugs but also alternatives to its consume in specific vulnerable moments
