The article presents an analysis of related concepts that are part of the structure of the project approach: project, project training, design technologies; an algorithm for the implementation of the project approach in the system of modern education in general and engineering educational practices in particular is presented. The article also substantiates the relevance of the choice of project-oriented technology in engineering education in Russia from the point of view of the main educational paths of universities in the countries represented, as well as an element of the comparative typology of the educational systems of Russia, which necessitates the use of a design approach in engineering education
