Abstract

The article deals with the requirements to a modern foreign language manual for non-linguists. The latter is looked upon as the core of the system of teaching materials essential for mastering a foreign language; the requirements to it, as well as to the system as a whole, are determined by the main ideas of the competence approach and refer to setting the aim, selecting the contents of teaching and the character of learning tasks offered to the students. A way to create a manual answering the requirements discussed is suggested; the main deficiencies of the manuals used nowadays are discussed. The article ends with the recommendations concerning the implementation of the requirements and the main principles of foreign language teaching to non-linguists.
