Abstract

The article views the International Festivals of Youth and Students: the first one (Prague, 1947), the sixth one (Moscow, 1957) and the twelfth one (Moscow, 1985) as an important instrument of public (‘people-to-people’) diplomacy. The author analyses the forms and methods the young people used in their work to consolidate their position as to the lessons of World War II, in their struggle for peace and international cooperation. It is shown that in hard conditions of the cold war confrontation these festivals helped form a positive image of the USSR, unite efforts in their struggle against wars and for social justice and equal rights throughout the world. At the same time the USSR communist authorities actively used the festivals for disseminating communist ideas among youth in capitalist countries, which turned such festivals into ‘an ideological battlefield’.
