Abstract

The article deals with a way of selecting key vocabulary using corpus of texts relevant to learners’ professional needs. Important issues such as core vocabulary size and the proportion of different types of vocabulary items are discussed. The article elaborates on the differences between spoken and written discourse in terms of lexical density. We consider pedagogical implications of corpora-based and discourse approach in teaching and selecting vocabulary.
