Abstract

The aim of this study is to generalize the directions and results of research carried out by foreign authors and described in English literature. The need for such review is caused by rapid increase of interest in issues related to alien and invasive plant species. This field of research activity is becoming less manageable today and requires structuring. In the field of invasive ecology we distinguish at least 20 major areas, and consider the most important of them. They are: the identification of the relationship between the level of species richness in natural and alien flora in areas of different sizes, the comparison of invasive species habitats at different latitudes, the comparison of species-specific traits within the natural and secondary areas, the description of the existing hypothesis of the invasive species success, the construction of models of species behavior and the verification of predictions for their invasive activity, the comparative-historical analysis of alien floras, the population genetic studies and hybridization, which leads to invasive potential increased, the studies of the allelopathy effect, spatio-temporal dynamics of plant invasions, the political, social and economic aspects of invasive plant ecology. This work is destined for specialists in the field of alien flora, graduate students and students in biology.
