Abstract

The article represents the historical and pedagogical analysis of Novgorodian birch bark manuscripts. It includes the linguistic peculiarities, their pedagogical content and function, rate of literacy among Novgorodian citizens. In particular, birch bark manuscripts, written by people of different social status, gender and age are analyzed in detail. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the pedagogical analysis of birch bark manuscripts and illustrations made by a medieval boy named Onfim wherein the methods for teaching writing and some features of a child’s upbringing in Novgorod are presented. The birch bark manuscripts provide us with important historical and pedagogical information that broadens and extends modern academic knowledge about the history of national education. In response to this, researchers discover documentary evidence about the level of education, methods of teaching and upbringing of children, and the sources of the development of pedagogical ideas in Novgorod and the ancient Russian state.
