Abstract

The idea of establishing a simplified phonological model (international pronunciation standard) for cross-cultural communication needs comes to the forefront and becomes especially urgent in view of the extensive use of English as a lingua franca of the contemporary world. A vast number of territorial, regional and social pronunciation varieties of English, as well as its use by non-native speakers stimulates the need of the establishment of an inventory of phonological competence skills sufficient for communicating with both natives and non-natives of English. Linguistic students, though, are challenged by a completely different task to achieve the maximally high level of language proficiency (C2), an integral part of which is phonological competence.
