Abstract

All available oceanographic data on water temperature in Peter the Great Bay obtained in 1952-2009 are collected. Two datasets are used for EOF decomposition: the set for SST (12,468 values for July-September) and the set for subsurface temperature (9,762 profiles from 15 m to the sea bottom or 100 m). Lacking data were recovered through optimization of iteration calculations. Water thermal structure in the Bay is determined by meteorological conditions in preceding winter, so winter temperature anomalies could be traced in the subsurface layer there and in adjacent waters through summer till autumn. Significant tendency of the surface water warming is estimated as 1.6-2.2 оС for the deep-water part of the Bay and 0.5-0.7 оС in the shallow parts of the secondary Amur and Ussuri Bays. On the contrary, negative tendency is observed in the subsurface waters with the temperature decreasing in 0.7-0.9 оС in the southwestern part of the Bay and 0.2-0.4 оС in its northern and eastern parts. Cyclic variations of SST are revealed by spectral analysis (95 % confidence) with the periods 2-3 and 11 years for the first EOF mode and 2-3 and 4 years for the second EOF mode. Subsurface water temperature varied with the period 2-3 and 9 years for the first EOF mode and 2-3, 4, and 8 years for the second EOF mode. The years of investigation are classified as "warm" (1952, 1958, 1960, 1967, 1968, 1973, 1975, 1978, 1984, 1988, 1991, 2000, 2006, 2007, and 2008), "normal" (1953, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005), and "cold" (1954, 1957, 1962, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2002, and 2009) ones for the sea surface and as "extremely warm" (1953), "warm" (1968, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1989, 1991, 1992, 2002, 2004, and 2008), "normal" (1952, 1954, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1964, 1967, 1971, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2009), "cold" (1962, 1972, 1973, 1978, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 2006), and "extremely cold" (2003) ones for subsurface waters.
