Abstract

Results of the research on the development and spatial distribution of phytoand zoocenosis in the brackish-water and marine zones of the western part of the Northern Caspian are presented in the paper. They are based on the data of seasonal and long-term dynamics of biomass and species composition. These results show the state of benthic ecosystems of that sea area, and when combined with other data (flow quantity, sea level, etc.), they forecast their further development. Data obtained on the level of phytoand zoobenthic communities development indicate high quality food areas of the bottom, and when information on ichthyofauna is available, they determine the carrying capacity of the sea in feeding areas of valuable fish species.
