Abstract

The authors analyzed the causes of the accident at Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station that were identified on the basis of examination of the factual material (graphs of pre-emergency load regime of the station) of the turbine 2, whose failure became the root cause of catastrophic damages at the station. It was determined that the main technical reason for pushing out the spinning part of the turbine 2 by pulsating flow from the turbine flow path during the turbine transient load regime was the fatigue damage of the bolts securing the turbine cover. The accumulation of the fatigue stresses was due to multiple transitions by the turbine 2 through the zone of undesired loads that is characterized by multiple excess of the recommended normalized levels of vibration.
