Abstract

The article emphasizes the importance of involving volunteers in psychosocial care for mental patients and reports the experience of a student volunteers movement Radouga (Rainbow) in psychosocial care for mental patients. During recent four years, 250 students have taken part in the activities of this movement, and 58 of them worked on regular basis, and the activities of the movement have covered more than 500 mental patients. The authors briefly describe the structured system of training for volunteers (The Young Volunteer School) and show mutual advantages for patients and students, the majority of which afterwards make choice for mental health sphere. Besides, voluntary work with involvement of new methods of psychosocial care (for instance, organized friendship) make social nets more accessible to mental patients and help in their social integration, and also, in a global sense, contributes to destigmatization of psychiatry in society. These voluntary activities happen to be an essential part of the developing community-based psychiatry.
