The aim of this thesis is to analyze the Democratic Party (DP) in terms of the elements of conservatism. The starting point of the study was to define the political identity of DP according to the criteria of conservatism, by analyzing the thoughts of the founder leaders, programs, actions and discourses of the Democrat Party, which was the opposition party from 1946 to 1950 and came to the power three consecutive terms (between the years 1950-1960) in Turkey, which turned to multiparty system in 1946. In order to achieve this goal, the historical process and the fundamental principles, prevailing then and now, of political conservatism, which is one of the three most effective political ideologies spreading all around the world following the French Revolution, were investigated. The fundamental elements of the political conservatism were taken as the theoretical framework of the study. The study was organized under four sections. In the first section, the historical development process of the political conservatism and the conservatism of the Continental Europe and the American conservatism were discussed. In the second section, the Turkish political conservatism thought in the period from the Rescript of Tanzimat (1839), which is accepted as the starting point of the "Westernization" process of our country, to the proclamation of the Republic (1923) were analyzed. Islamism was investigated as the ideology closest to the political conservatism. Conservatism during the Turkish Independence War, in the First National Assembly and the Progressive Republican Party (Terakkiperver Cumhuriyet Fırkası) and the Liberal Republican Party (Serbest Fırka) in the 1st and 2nd Group and the Second National Assembly were analyzed. After the transition to the multiparty political system, the birth process of DP, which was founded in 1946, the lives of Celal Bayar and Adnan Menderes, who had been effective on DP until the end of its rule were examined. In the fourth section, the program and discourse and actions of DP, which were in the political arena between 1946-1960, were analyzed in terms of the fundamental elements of the political conservatism. In the conclusions and evaluation section, DP was analyzed in terms of the criteria of the political conservatism. Through these analyses, it was seen that DP was liberal in terms of economic thought but conservative in terms of political thought. Thus, DP was defined as a liberal conservative party. Bu tezin amacı, 1946 yılından itibaren çok partili siyasi hayata geçen ülkemizde, 1946-1950 tarihleri arasında muhalefet; 1950-1960 tarihleri arasında da kesintisiz olarak, üç dönem üst üste iktidara gelen Demokrat Parti'nin, programını, eylemlerini ve söylemlerini siyasal muhafazakarlık kriterlerine göre tanımlamaktır. Bu amaca ulamak için, Fransız İhtilalı'ndan sonra dünyaya yayılan üç büyük siyasal ideolojiden biri olan siyasal muhafazakarlığın tarihsel süreci, temel ilkeleri ve son durumu incelenmiştir. Dört bölüm olarak düzenlenen bu çalışmada kuramsal çerçeve olarak, siyasal muhafazakarlığın temel öğeleri esas alınmıştır. Birinci bölümde, siyasal muhafazakarlığın tarihi gelişim süreci, Kıta Avrupası, İngiliz ve Amerikan muhafazakarlığı incelenmiştir. İkinci bölümde, bir ideoloji olarak siyasal muhafazakarlığın temel öğeleri ve partileşme süreci analiz edilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, ülkemizin "Batılılaşma" sürecinin başlangıcı kabul edilen, Tanzimat Fermanı'ndan (1839) Cumhuriyet'in ilanına (1923) kadar geçen süreçte, Türk siyasal muhafazakarlık düşüncesi analiz edilmiştir. Bu süre içerisinde siyasal muhafazakarlaşma en yakın ideoloji olan İslamcılık incelenmiştir. Kurtuluş savaşı sırasındaki Birinci Meclis'teki Birinci ve İkinci Grup ve İkinci Meclis'teki TpCF ve SCF analiz edilmiştir. Çok partili siyasal hayata geçildikten sonra, 1946 yılından sonra kurulan DP'nin doğuş süreci ve iktidar döneminin sonuna kadar DP üzerinde etkili olan Celal Bayar ve Adnan Menderes'in hayatları incelenmiştir. Dördüncü bölümde (1946-1960) yılları arasında siyasal faaliyette bulunan DP'nin, programı, söylemleri ve eylemleri siyasal muhafazakarlığın temel öğelerine göre analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç ve değerlendirme bölümünde ise, siyasal muhafazakarlığın dünyadaki son durumu, önemi ve DP'nin siyasal muhafazakarlık kriterlerine göre değerlendirilmesi yapılmıştır. Bu analizler çerçevesinde, DP'nin iktisadi düşünce bakımından liberal, siyasi düşünce bakımından da muhafazakarlığa yakın olduğu görülmüştür. Bu nedenle DP liberal muhafazakar bir parti olarak tanımlanmıştır.
