Abstract

The article is devoted to determining the place that the Aryans occupy in the texts of the Avesta. It is determined that the term airya is used in the Avesta as a self-identifier along with the term mazdayasna (“those who worship Mazda”). It is indicated that direct identification of these terms is impossible. Based on the analysis of the “Aryan” terminology of the Avesta, it is established that the Aryans are tied to geographical objects or a certain territory, have special characteristics (hvarno) and are organized in a community. The criteria for self-identification of the Aryans include economic activities (agriculture and animal breeding), belonging to a particular religious system, the performance of rituals and the struggle against the enemies of the Avestan society
