Side Müzesi`nden bir grup figürlü mezar steli

Abstract

A Group of Figure Funerary Stele From Side MuseumIn this work a group of figured-funerary steles preserved in the Side Museum is typologically, iconographically, stylistically and chronologically discussed and the types of steles and the figures portrayed on them are analysed.Since the steles depicting farewell scenes outnumber the others, the iconography of this theme is dealt together with the descriptions of the figures. It is particularly noteworthy that among the funerary steles in the Museum not even a single one shows the scene of a funerary meal. They are mainly family steles rendered within similar patterns. The figures are listed under the titles of The Male Figures, The Female Figures and The Figures of Children and Servants. The Male and Female Figures are examined as Standing and Seated Males and Standing and Seated Females. The figure types of standing males, like those of female figures ,are typologically classified depending on the movement of the arms and legs and the way the clothing clings.Among the standing, clothed- male figures on the steles numbered MS-1, MS-2, MS-3 , MS-4, MS-5 and MS-6 ?The Hippocrates (Cos) Type? in MS-3, ?The Pudicitia Type? in MS-5 and certain types called as ?The Different Form of the Hippocrates (Cos) Type? are seen while the figures portrayed in MS-1, MS-2, MS-4 and MS-6 are treated as singular examples under the title of ? The Others ?. Among the female figures in MS-1, MS-2, MS-4, MS-5, MS-6, MS-7 and MS-8 the figures seated on the left of the adoration in MS-5, MS-6 and MS-8 are analysed under the title of ? The Pudicitia Type Seated Females ? and those sitting on the right of the adoration in MS-1 and MS-2 are examined under the title of ?The Seated Females Bidding Farewell?. The sitting female figures of MS- 4 and MS-7, which cannot be classified under a certain group, are treated as singular examples under the title of ?The Other Sitting Females?. All figures are compared as far as possible with the early, contemporary and late examples featuring similar subjects, typology, styles and drapery and folds in clothing and are dated accordingly. The evidence gathered from this study is supported by the tables, maps, panels and drawings in order to make the argument more understandable.KEYWORDSSide Museum, Pamphylia, Funerary Steles, Hellenistic Period, Relief, Naiskos, Dexiosis,Pudicitia
