Razvijanje kartografske pismenosti u primarnome obrazovanju

Abstract

Cartographic literacy includes the knowledge of elements and content of geographical maps, as well as the interpretation of spatial organizations and processes through the reading of the geographic map content. Primary school teachers are the first to introduce students to the world of cartography, and their role is to create an encouraging environment for understanding and accepting complex cartographic content, which requires the complex decoding of colors, topographic symbols, and terminology. The primary research tool is interviews with students and teachers, used to collect and analyze data on the effectiveness of developing cartographic skills across groups of cartographic content. The research results indicate that students enjoy using geographical maps during the teaching of geographic topics and have developed cartographic skills aligned with the curriculum outcomes. However, challenges arise in decoding relief features depicted by colors and in understanding spatial relationships determined by cardinal directions.
