La visión gótica de la Catedral de Toledo

Abstract

La Catedral de Toledo comenzó a construirse en 1226. La ciudad -central en la historia de la España Medieval- fue capital del reino visigodo, con su correspondiente iglesia primada que fue destruida durante la ocupación musulmana dando lugar a una mezquita. Recuperado por los cristianos en el año 1085, la decisión de la construcción este edificio fue tomada en tiempos de Fernando III por el arzobispo toledano Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada. Allí, la dinastía castellana mostró la importancia que la ciudad tenía para la corona, lugar de enterramiento de la mayor parte de los reyes de la dinastía Trastámara; Juana y Felipe el Hermoso se proclamaron reyes de Castilla en el templo. Es una catedral a la altura de la capital de un imperio, que perderá dicha categoría en 1561, cuando Felipe II decide trasladar la corte a la villa de Madrid.
