| The authors elevate Tillandsia carnosa var. boliviensis to species rank as Tillandsia mecapacana, emend its description and provide detailed illustrations. This bromeliad species, originally described as a variety of T. carnosa by Harry E. Luther, is largely unknown and originates from Mecapaca, Dpto. of La Paz, Bolivia. While it superficially resembles T. carnosa, and also T. krukoffiana, a closer morphological analysis and its terrestrial lifestyle clearly differentiate it from them. However, molecular genetic evidence suggests its closer relationship to the T. australis complex.
