Proposals to the State Standard "Marine estuaries"

Abstract

The interdisciplinary science of marine estuaries as a separate, complex geographical object, develops through the synthesis of oceanology and hydrology, which requires the use of terms and definitions from these related sciences adapted to the estuarine theme. Currently, there are no regulatory documents on the use of special terms and definitions in this knowledge area, which causes problems associated with the lack of universal terminology in scientific and applied papers, makes it difficult to understand them, and sometimes reduces the quality and effectiveness. Old State standards from the early 1970s are outdated, and later guidance documents either duplicate them, or do not reflect many aspects of scientific research and do not meet modern requirements for them. Therefore, the task of improving regulatory documentation is relevant. On the way to its solution, on the basis of structural and hydrological zoning of different types of marine estuaries, and a critical analysis of previously developed standards, existing manuals, guidelines and other literary sources, terms and definitions of the basic concepts of the science of marine estuaries have been developed. A new edition of 147 terms and definitions is proposed for wide discussion (in contrast to the previously standardized 45 terms), which includes 5 sections describing the structure and boundaries of the marine estuary, its hydrographic network, morphological elements, regime, phenomena, including ice and dangerous phenomena, as well as estuarine processes. Standardization of the proposed terms can be useful for the unification of scientific works in the field of oceanography, hydrology of sea estuaries and related sciences, as well as practical application.
