Luxe privé/faste public : le thème de l’aedificatio du IIe siècle av. J.-C. au début de l’Empire

Abstract

L’etude de l’attitude des Romains vis-a-vis du luxe des constructions publiques et privees suggere une legitimation progressive de ce dernier. La fin de la Republique marque l’arret de la polemique sur l’architecture publique luxueuse. Avec l’avenement de l’Empire, la magnificentia publica, monopolisee par l’empereur, devient legitime. Le luxe des constructions publiques atteste de la munificence imperiale et de la grandeur de Rome. Meme dans la partie privee des demeures imperiales, l’archeologie temoigne d’un faste ostentatoire desormais necessaire a l’image de l’empereur. Quant aux particuliers, nous notons un decalage dans le temps entre la legitimation sociale et politique du luxe des demeures privees et sa legitimation morale. Cette derniere est acquise des la seconde moitie du Ier s. ap. J.-C. Cette celebration du gout pour les villas et de leurs marbres somptueux est inseparable d’une nouvelle approche de l’otium, elle-meme liee au nouvel environnement politique lie au Principat.
