Abstract

Due to the scarcity of sedimentary models of the Eemian interglacial in northern France, the thick silty-peat alluvial sequence of the Paleolithic site of Waziers represents an exceptional sedimentary archive for paleoenvironmental reconstructions, covering the period from the Late Saalian to the Eemian. The pollen record obtained from two sections (Log 6 and SC5) allows to document local and regional environmental changes. The regional vegetation dynamic illustrate the classic succession observed during glacial-interglacial transitions (tundra-steppe - steppe grassland - forest of pioneer trees) and is characterized by the typical development of thermophytic deciduous woodlands associated with the Eemian. in northern Europe (succession of Ulmus, Quercus, Corylus and finally Carpinus betulus as dominant trees). Locally, the site progresses from a wet meadow with Cyperaceae to a peat bog and finally to an Alnus swamp forest.
