La universidad como motor de regeneración urbana: el proyecto para el nuevo rectorado de “Roma Tre”

Abstract

El distrito Ostiense-Portuense de Roma fue reconocido con los diversos planes generales de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, como el área urbana apta para la construcción de diversos centros industriales. Ya en 1891 se construyó el gran complejo del Matadero cerca de la colina artificial de "Testaccio". Además, la presencia del puerto fluvial favoreció en los primeros años del siglo XX, la construcción de una central para el gas y una eléctrica, así como almacenes y mercados generales. Con el paso de los años el tejido industrial se fue enriqueciendo hasta llegar a la época fascista con la construcción de fábricas consideradas estratégicas para los intereses militares. Entre finales de los años 1960 y la década de 1990 empezó el lento proceso de abandono de las antiguas fábricas, al cual siguieron los proyectos de regeneración urbana, muchos de los cuales se llevaron a cabo gracias a la presencia de la Universidad "Roma Tre”. Fundada a finales en 1991, la nueva institución contribuyó a la recuperación de numerosas plantas industriales, convirtiéndolas en nuevos centros de educación. La construcción del nuevo rectorado realizado por Mario Cucinella se inserta en este contexto, donde la voluntad de recuperar un antiguo solar industrial, bien se asocia con las características típicas de un proyecto bioclimático.
