Early-Medieval Enclosures of the Koo-I Complex in the East Altai (based on excavations by A.S. Vasyutin)

Abstract

The article presents the publication of materials from the excavations of the Turkic enclosures at the Koo-I complex in the Eastern Altai, investigated by the Altai detachment of the South Siberian archaeological expedition of Kemerovo State University under the leadership of A.S. Vasyutin in 1984. To date, only a few objects of this site have been published, which does not allow the complete use of the materials obtained. On the basis of the information presented in the reporting documentation the authors of the article carry out the general description of the complex and present a detailed description of the studied early medieval fences Б-В and Г-Д. The analysis of the recorded characteristics made it possible to conclude that the excavated objects of the Koo-I site demonstrate the tradition of Turkic enclosures, which became widespread in the vast territories of the Central Asian region in the early Middle Ages. The revealed features of the structures give grounds for preliminary dating of structures in the framework of the second half of the Vth - the first half of the VIIth centuries AD and attributing them to the early stages in the development of the Turkic archaeological culture.
