METAPHYSICS AND THE PHENOMENON OF ART IN THE WORKS OF TITUS BURCKHARDT (1908-1984)

Abstract

This article discusses traditionalism as a direction in modern art studies, opposing both positivism as it denies the deepest (philosophical and theological) meanings, and the isolation of supporters of the sacralization of art, which was previously inspired by various creeds. The range of problems faced by traditionalist comparative studies is considered on the basis of a scientific research by Swiss Scientist T. Burckhardt. It is demonstrated that in search of the ultimate foundations that allow comparing the deepest meanings of art developed within the framework of different cultures and inspired by various religions and teachings (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism), traditionalists construct their own special concept of «metaphysics of art», peculiarly interpreting the teachings of thinkers of antiquity and the Middle Ages.
