Monodrama as an Object of Theoretical and Critical Reflection: History Research

Abstract

The author of the article summarizes the main trends of world literary works on history of monodrama's research and outlines potential field for further scientific research. J. Bortnik noted that the term “monodrama” being used by the authors, literary critics and art historians to refer the presence of one character in the book, one actor on the stage to demonstrate the monologic of character's expression. Meaning of the term is often giving by mixing literary and theatre terminology in dictionaries, theoretical articles. In this article J. Bortnik analyzes the works of German, British, American, Ukrainian, Russian and others literary and notes that their scientific research reflect the interdisciplinary approach of the study of the cultural and historical monodrama’s phenomenon; related monodrama as theatrical genre, part dramatization theory, form production, psychotherapeutic method, a form of subjectivity, special view on reality and art. The author of the article notes that these scientific research are local, which emphasis on the individual author’s, national, etc., phenomenon, and do not go beyond it to important theoretical generalizations. According to the view of the author of this article, monodrama went to the next level of development realized as a dramatic genre in the end of XX century, and was realized as a cultural and historical phenomenon in XXI century. Monodrama as unique artistic phenomena manifested through the implementation of compensatory functions: monodrama became the indicator of genuine human desire to preserve the authentic I and expand its capabilities by manifestation of its absolute right on “ego”-expression. 

Обобщены основные литературоведческие тенденции в исследовании монодрамы, намечено потенциальное поле для дальнейших научных исследований. Указано, что термин „монодрама” в течение длительной истории своего существования использовали для обозначения наличия одного персонажа в произведении, одного актера на сцене, для демонстрации монологичности высказывания персонажа. Значение термина часто выражалось через смешивания литературоведческой и театроведческой терминологии. Проанализированы труды немецких, английских, американских, украинских, российских и др. литературоведов. Указано, что их научные исследования отражают междисциплинарный подход в изучении такого культурно-исторического феномена, как монодрама; связаны с монодрамой как театральным жанром, составляющей теории театрализации, формой постановки, психотерапевтическим методом, формой субъективности, особым взглядом на действительность и искусство. 

Узагальнено основні літературознавчі тенденції з історії дослідження монодрами та окреслено потенційне поле для подальших наукових розвідок. Зазначено, що термін „монодрама” протягом тривалої історії свого існування використовували для позначення наявності одного персонажа у творі, одного актора на сцені, для демонстрації монологічності висловлювання персонажа. Значення терміна часто подавалося через змішування літературознавчої і театрознавчої термінології. Проаналізовано праці німецьких, англійських, американських, українських, російських та ін. літературознавців, зазначено, що їхні наукові розвідки відображають міждисциплінарний підхід у вивченні такого культурно-історичного феномену, як монодрама; пов’язані з монодрамою як театральним жанром, складовою теорії театралізації, формою постановки, психотерапевтичним методом, формою суб’єктивності, особливим поглядом на дійсність і мистецтво.
