Abstract

Abstract Following the roads taken by Franconian architect Carl Haller von Hallerstein between 1810 and 1817, we describe two sanctuaries on the mountaintops of the Peloponnese: the temene of Zeus Lykaios, in Arcadia, and of Zeus Ithome in Messenia. Based on Haller’s unpublished observations and drawings, as well as on recently discovered archaeological data, the aim is to review the characteristics of these sanctuaries and cults to define their origins and functions within the Arcadian eschatia and on the acropolis overlooking the polis of Messene and the Stenyclaros plain.
